227 photo entries were submitted in the 2019-2020 News & Features and Picture Story/Series competitions. The first-place winners of those competitions qualified for the
Hearst Journalism Awards National Championship. In addition, four finalists were selected from a semi-final round to participate.

The assignment and instructions shared with the finalists:

“As citizens, we’ve entered a new period of social, economic and health-related instability that has impacted each of us in different ways. For your final assignment, we ask you to turn your vision inward, and reveal to us in five to eight images, your personal quarantine experience. Your safety, and that of those around you, is paramount. You are obligated to adhere to the shelter in place guidelines and to fulfill your assignment from within the boundaries of your home. ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-18

HEARST INTERCOLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP| 2017-18

Since 1960, the overall ranking of the top schools in the writing category has been recognized. As the program grew to include photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia, monetary prizes were granted to the intercollegiate competitions in 1990, giving journalism schools a higher financial stake in the collective success of their students.

The Intercollegiate Competitions award prizes of $10,000, $4,000 and $2,000 to the top three universities in each division – writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia. This year a new $25,000 prize was added to the budget for the first-place Intercollegiate Overall winner–raising the Intercollegiate total to $89,000. Trophies are also awarded to the top ten schools in each category.

The accumulated points earned by individual students in the monthly writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia competitions determine these Intercollegiate rankings. The winners are those schools whose students have earned the highest total points in each division. The Overall Intercollegiate winners are those schools whose students have earned the highest accumulated points in all of the competitions.

HEARST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP | 2017-18

This year, 220 entries were received in the two photojournalism competitions. The first-place winners of the News & Feature and Picture Story/Series competitions qualified to participate in the Championship. In addition, 10 top entrants from those competitions qualified for a semi-final round of judging. For this round, the semi-finalists submitted portfolios which included portraits, features, sports shots, news pieces, singles and a picture story. After much deliberation, the program judges selected six finalists to attend the Hearst National Photojournalism Championship held in San Francisco, June 3-7, 2018.

Sunday, June 3rd, shortly after arriving in San Francisco, the photo finalists met the judges for orientation, portfolio review and to receive their assignments. This year’s assignment was a photo story exploring “the year of the woman.” They were also assigned a single on the theme of “what matters to me.” The photojournalists had a day and a half to shoot and edit their photos before their Tuesday deadline of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday morning, the judges reviewed the submissions and selected their top choices. The winners were announced at that evening’s awards ceremony.
